What is Therapy?

Therapy is a process in which a trained professional enters a relationship(s) with a client for the purpose of helping the client with personal growth, behavioral issues or symptoms of a mental illness. The process involves the client and the therapist talking about issues which is why it is often called “talk therapy”. Issues may include feeling “lost” or “stuck”, feeling anxiety or panic, depression, anger, sadness, feeling obsessions or compulsions or just feeling unhappy for a number of reasons. These issues may have led to drug use or withdrawn behavior from individuals or social situations. Psychotherapy can help people who are feeling any of these symptoms or others not listed.

Child therapy provides children with the opportunity to address the issues that are having a negative impact on their daily lives. Staff will work with children to teach new ways to handle every day events so they can function more positively in their families, school and community surroundings. Child therapy may use a combination of play and talk therapy to assist the child in addressing the issues that are impacting the quality of the child’s life. Child therapists will work closely with the child’s family, school, and other community members to ensure that everyone is working towards common treatment plan goals.
Clients will have the opportunity to utilize role-plays and other situational learning exercises to address the current anger patterns and ways to bring new behavior choices into their lives. Clients will be given new ways to become self-thinking individuals and accept responsibility for the choices they make when angry and acting out. Clients will be expected to process through the choices that lead to conflict so that the triggers to anger can be identified. Therapy will assist the client in developing strategies to express anger in healthy ways that lead to problem solutions rather than life disruptions. POR staff believes that anger has a positive underlying message. Often times it is a child’s attempt to communicate a need to belong and attach to others without knowing how to effectively express it.
The quality of our relationships is often a key element in the happiness of our life. All families and couples, at one time or another, experience situations when they are unable to agree. Sometimes, a disagreement can grow into a stressful living situation where unhealthy living patterns are repeated day in and day out. Research has shown the importance of learning to resolve differences in a positive manner is an important part of creating and maintaining loving, energizing relationships with family and friends. Family and Couples therapy focuses on gaining understanding and insight into each individuals interaction with each other as well as daily life events. The exploration of self beliefs, philosophies and behavior in the context of couples therapy allows for the creation of a healthy mind set and behavior patterns that help to meet the needs of the family or couple. Clients of family and couples therapy will explore concepts such as reflective or active listening, effective communication strategies for men and woman, conflict and anger management. In addition, family members and couples will learn new ways to expand the love and bond they share.
Relaxation training will be utilized as a teaching tool in both group and individual therapy sessions. During a group activity children will explore the techniques of creative visualization, abdominal breathing, guided imagery, and other relaxation techniques as a way to re-energize the mind and body.
